Metamucil for bottoming adds bulk: the powder and capsules are psyllium husk, a well-studied fiber that helps form soft, solid stool. But it only does half the job. It leaves your gut bacteria hungry, it's a gritty drink many people stop taking, and Metamucil's gummies are inulin, not psyllium. Peachy Clean does both jobs, in two gummies you'll actually look forward to.

Below: how the two compare, and how to take Metamucil if it's already in your cupboard.

Does Metamucil work for bottoming?

It does half the job. Good prep is mostly about stool that's well formed, soft and complete, and psyllium's bulk helps with that. The other half, feeding your gut bacteria, it mostly skips.

A 2022 meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials found fiber supplements helped chronic constipation, with psyllium among the fibers showing clear effects. The best results came above 10 g a day for at least 4 weeks, and the fiber groups had more gas. So it's a daily habit; one dose before a hookup won't do much.

How the psyllium in Metamucil works

Psyllium is a soluble, gel-forming fiber. It soaks up water and forms a gel that resists bacterial breakdown, so much of it stays intact through your colon and keeps stool bulky, soft and easy to pass.

  • The upside: it bulks reliably and tends to cause less gas than fast-fermenting fibers like inulin.
  • The missing half: your gut bacteria barely touch it, so psyllium leaves them hungry.

What Metamucil's labels say (as of October 2026)

  • Premium Blend powder: 3 g dietary fiber (2 g soluble) from psyllium husk per rounded teaspoon (5.7 g), in 8 oz or more of cool liquid, up to 3 times a day.
  • Psyllium Fiber Capsules: at least 1.8 g of psyllium soluble fiber per serving of up to 5 capsules; 2 to 5 capsules up to 4 times a day, each with at least 8 oz of liquid.
  • Fiber Gummies: 5 g dietary fiber per 3 gummies, from chicory root fiber (inulin) and soluble corn fiber (Fibersol). Start with 1 to 3 gummies a day, up to 3 servings.

The labels also say to start with one serving a day, that minor bloating is possible while you adjust, and to keep it 2 hours from medicines.

Heads up: Metamucil gummies don't contain psyllium

If you're choosing Metamucil for psyllium's track record, the gummies won't give you that. Their Supplement Facts list chicory root fiber (inulin) and soluble corn fiber.

Inulin ferments quickly, which is why many people get gas and bloating from inulin-based gummies, especially in the first week. We left inulin and FOS out of Peachy Clean on purpose: they're too disruptive. More in does fiber cause bloating?

How to take Metamucil for bottoming: step by step

  1. Start at least a week out, or better, make it an everyday habit.
  2. Start low: one rounded teaspoon of powder a day, then increase gradually over a week or two.
  3. Mix and drink fast, in at least 8 oz of cool liquid, before it thickens.
  4. Drink more water all day. The NIH's digestive disease institute advises plenty of liquids to help fiber work.
  5. Space it from meds, at least 2 hours away from medications, including PrEP, per Metamucil's label. Ask your pharmacist if unsure.
  6. Keep it steady on prep day. Doubling up the day before means extra gas.

Why many people stop taking Metamucil

  • The drink: gritty, and it thickens fast.
  • The water: 8 oz or more every dose, up to 3 times a day.
  • The pill count: a full capsule dose can be 5 capsules at a time.
  • The adjustment period: early bloating is often when people give up.
  • The gummy version: it uses inulin, which ferments fast and can cause gas.

A fiber you skip half the week won't do much for your prep. Fiber only works if you take it every day, so we made Peachy Clean a gummy you actually look forward to: no mixing, no grit and no inulin or chicory root.

Frequently asked questions

Is Metamucil good for bottoming?
It does half the job. Metamucil powder and capsules are psyllium, which adds bulk and helps form soft stool, but it leaves your gut bacteria hungry and comes as a gritty drink. Peachy Clean does both jobs in two gummies a day.
How long before bottoming should I take Metamucil?
Start at least a week before, and ideally take it every day. A single dose the night before won't change much and may just leave you gassy.
How much Metamucil should I take for bottoming?
Follow the label: 1 rounded teaspoon of powder in at least 8 oz of liquid once a day, increasing gradually up to 3 times a day if needed. Drink extra water and keep it at least 2 hours away from medications.
Do Metamucil gummies work for bottoming?
They're a different product from the powder. According to their label, Metamucil Fiber Gummies use chicory root fiber (inulin) and soluble corn fiber, not psyllium. Inulin ferments quickly and can cause gas and bloating, which is why Peachy Clean leaves it out.
Is Peachy Clean better than Metamucil?
For bottoming prep, we think so. Metamucil powder is psyllium, a well-studied bulking fiber, but it only does half the job and comes as a gritty drink up to 3 times a day. Peachy Clean does both jobs, gentle fiber plus a spore-forming probiotic, in 2 gummies a day with no inulin.
Does Metamucil make you gassy?
It can while your gut adjusts; Metamucil's own label mentions minor bloating for new users. Starting with one serving a day and increasing slowly, with plenty of water, usually helps.
