How much fiber for bottoming? Aim for your full daily target, 28 to 34 grams for most men, from food plus a supplement that does both jobs, like Peachy Clean. Start at least one to two weeks before you plan to bottom, because fiber works through consistency, not a big dose the night before.
Ninety-seven percent of American men don't eat enough fiber, and that gap is behind a lot of unpredictable prep.
How much fiber for bottoming: grams per day
There's no special bottoming dose. The goal is to hit the target for your age every day, which keeps stool soft, formed and easy to pass completely. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines base these on 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories:
| Age | Men: daily fiber goal | Women: daily fiber goal |
|---|---|---|
| 19 to 30 | 34 g | 28 g |
| 31 to 50 | 31 g | 25 g |
| 51 and older | 28 g | 22 g |
The average American eats about 16 grams a day, so most guys have a gap of roughly 12 to 18 grams to close. That gap, more than your douching technique, is usually why prep feels like a coin toss.
How much fiber should come from a supplement?
Food should do most of the work, because whole foods bring a mix of fiber types plus water and nutrients. A supplement fills the rest. A typical serving adds:
- Psyllium powder: about 3.4 g of psyllium husk per rounded teaspoon, up to three times a day.
- Psyllium capsules: about 0.5 g each, so a five-capsule dose is roughly 2.6 g.
- Fiber gummies: usually a few grams. Peachy Clean gives you 4 g of resistant maltodextrin per two gummies.
Most fiber supplements only do half the job: psyllium bulks you up but leaves your gut bacteria hungry, and inulin gummies can leave you bloated. Peachy Clean does both jobs, with no inulin or FOS, which we left out because they're too disruptive.
Fiber researchers suggest starting a new supplement at no more than 3 to 4 grams a day for the first week, then building gradually toward about 10 to 15 grams of supplemental fiber if you need it.
What a 30-gram day looks like
- Breakfast (12 g): 1 cup cooked oatmeal with 1 cup raspberries.
- Lunch (10 g): whole wheat wrap with half a cup of black beans and veggies.
- Snack (5 g): a medium pear.
- Dinner (5 g): salmon with 1 cup cooked broccoli and some rice.
- Supplement (4 g): 2 Peachy Clean gummies.
That's about 36 g. More ideas in our bottoming food list.
When should you start taking fiber before bottoming?
The earlier the better, and the best version is never stopping.
- Daily habit (4+ weeks): best results. Stool is consistently soft and formed.
- 2 weeks before: a real difference for most people, with time to build your dose gently.
- 1 week before: some improvement. Keep the dose moderate so you don't trade mess for gas.
- 2 to 3 days before: limited benefit. Don't jump to a big dose.
- The day of: too late to help, and a big new dose can cause gas at exactly the wrong time.
Even if you only bottom now and then, a daily habit means your gut is already running smoothly when a date comes up. That's the idea behind our 3-day prep timeline.
"I was very skeptical at 1st, but these are the best. By day 7 my douching time went down from about 1 hour to under 10 minutes."

How long does fiber take to work for bottoming?
Psyllium labels say it generally produces a bowel movement within 12 to 72 hours. The soft, complete, low-residue stool you want for prep takes longer:
- Days 1 to 3: stool often gets softer and easier to pass.
- Week 1: more regular, more complete trips for many people.
- Weeks 2 to 4: the effect settles in and becomes your new normal.
Our customers describe a similar curve: many notice softer, easier trips within about 48 hours, and most say it really clicks around weeks 2 to 4. Give it at least 7 days before you judge it. Individual results may vary. Try Peachy Clean for softer, easier trips, with a 60-day money-back guarantee on your first order. More in does Peachy Clean work?
What time of day should you take fiber?
Whatever time you'll remember; consistency matters more than timing. Fiber only works if you take it every day, so we made Peachy Clean a gummy you actually look forward to: 2 gummies with a full glass of water.
- Always with water. Psyllium needs at least a full 8-ounce glass every time.
- Space it from medicines. Psyllium labels say to take prescription medicines at least 2 hours before or after it.
What to do with fiber on the day you bottom
- Keep your normal dose. Don't skip it and don't double it.
- Take it at your usual time, or earlier if your usual time is right before the date.
- Eat lighter in the last few hours. A heavy or spicy meal close to sex matters more than your fiber timing.
- Leave time for a normal bowel movement. With a steady fiber habit, many people need far less douching, or only a quick rinse.
Date tomorrow and you haven't started? Skip the big dose, eat light and start the daily habit after.
Fiber troubleshooter: what to do if it isn't working
- Bloated or gassy in week 1: drop to your last comfortable dose for a week, then build more slowly. Stopping and restarting resets the adjustment.
- Stool still hard: add water before you add fiber. Soluble fiber needs fluid to soften stool.
- Stool loose or urgent: your dose jumped too quickly. Step back one level and hold it for a week.
- Gassy on one product but fine on food fiber: often inulin or chicory root. Switch to one without them, like Peachy Clean (see our fiber comparison).
- Still messy after 2 weeks: look at what and when you eat on the day, and leave time for a normal bowel movement.
If one fiber keeps giving you gas, our guide to fiber bloating explains why.
See a doctor if you notice rectal bleeding that doesn't stop, severe or worsening pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, or a change in bowel habits lasting more than a few weeks. Get help right away for chest pain, vomiting or trouble swallowing after taking psyllium.
